Prints

These prints are created using zinc plates on which the images are developed using a variety of drawing and soft ground processes. They are then printed in limited editions. In some instances the skies have been tinted by rolling a tone onto an inked, wiped plate. In other cases, color is added by hand after the prints have dried.

Prints are matted in cream, acid-free mats.

Framed prints are matted and framed in silver chrome frames with plexiglas.

Prints can be purchased without mats or frames – prices on request.

The Errant Vine

The Errant Vine

A clematis vine outside my dining room window is inclined to expand, by late August, beyond my expected limits for its scope. This time it worked its way through and around the shutter slats.

The Fallen Pear

The Fallen Pear

Aside from the compositional appeal of this scene, it makes me chuckle to think of this pear, which just couldn’t seem to sit upright with his peers, as being “fallen” in other ways as well.  He is another one of my ongoing fascination with anthropomorphic pear scenes.

The Garden Watchers

The Garden Watchers

On daily bike rides one summer I routinely passed this garden with its two chairs. As the season progressed and the garden began to develop, its particular crops became more obvious, as squash leaves took over, corn rose, and tomatoes were visible in their ripening. The chairs kept moving, too, as though affording attention (perhaps even a cheering section) to different aspects of the garden. I never saw the chairs inhabited, but their presence and migration let me know that they, at least, were watching the garden grow.

The Horseshoe Pitch

The Horseshoe Pitch

On Monhegan Island at The Trailing Yew, a classic boarding house, the horseshoe pitch is a focal point. Everyone gathers here to await the clanging bell that signals the arrival of each day's breakfast and dinner. Tinting the pine tree that overlooks this scene was an experiment. Fortunately, I liked the results.

The Japanese Island

The Japanese Island

Friends invited me to their home along the Damariscotta River. The little island their view included gave the scene a very Japanese quality. I knew immediately I needed to draw that island, so I invited myself back to revisit the view.

The Kitchen Window

The Kitchen Window

A shasta daisy and the apple tree outside my kitchen window both bore fruit at the same time one summer. I looked out the window, and there was a print which needed to be put on a plate; thus, “The Kitchen Window”.

The Pumpkin Patch

The Pumpkin Patch

A former professor and mentor, Leonard DeLonga, left a huge void in my life when he died. After his death a show of his work included a painting of a field of pumpkins that I really liked. This print, though nothing like his painting, was a salute to Leonard.

The Red Lily

The Red Lily

The red lily was the first plant I added to the garden at my house. The natural composition of form and color it made at the corner of the house made me produce this print, one of my earliest Mills scenes. The flag doesn’t really have blue stripes, but that was the color they needed to be - I think that’s what’s known as taking artistic license.

The Screened Porch

The Screened Porch

For fifteen years my home base was in Oxford, Maryland, a wondrous small town on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Our house had a screened porch that featured this hammock in the corner. On hot summer evenings this porch became a second living room where one could cool off, read, converse, or listen to the sounds of the coming night. It was truly a place of refuge, commemorated in this print.

The Sentinel

The Sentinel

Sunflowers have an unending fascination for me. Each summer I try to develop my own crop, sometimes in pots, other times in beds. All manner of pests that roam the acreage at night work against my efforts, so when I do succeed from time to time, it is a great victory. When they endure, these horticultural wonders are sentinels, indeed, following the sun through the day and keeping silent watch into the early Fall.

  • Unframed & Matted: $150.00
The Snow Family

The Snow Family

Following a late spring snow, I drove around a bend in the road near my house past a rock so huge it's become a directional landmark. There, someone had sculpted a family of miniature snow people sporting twig arms and expressive poses that made them look as though they were dancing. My amusement at the sight made this print a reality.

The Star Barn

The Star Barn

In central Pennsylvania there is a well-known, most elaborate barn with a number of decorative stars in its structure. This bird house model of that star barn appeared one day in a garden shop in Maine, having been made by a man in Pennsylvania, and my mother decided it needed to live in our garden. To date, no bird has dared move into it despite the consistently open door, but it is a hopeful reminder, in our Maine garden, of our Pennsylvania roots.

There’s a Rabbit Running Through My Garden

There’s a Rabbit Running Through My Garden

These garden stakes a friend made were a feature in my garden in Oxford, Maryland. The running rabbit always fascinated me, so one summer I did his portrait among the marigolds and iris foliage. Fortunately he was running too rapidly to eat the plants.

Three Boscs

Three Boscs

A friend did a series of paintings of pears one year, most of them single portraits. Her pictures made me see them in a new light. Then, last March I went to the market looking for flowers to draw. The pears caught my eye, and I came home with pears instead of flowers. The more you look at them the more anthropomorphic they become. Here is a singing trio, The Three Boscs.

Tree Tunnel

Tree Tunnel

I still recall taking trips as a child to visit relatives in a little village in Pennsylvania called Maytown. The route we took involved driving along a road lined with huge old trees. We called this the tree tunnel because it was just that, and riding through this cool, dark, avenue was both fascinating and magical. Years later I found myself driving a similar road and decided to do this print to return to my past.

Tulip Study

Tulip Study

One snowy Saturday in late February I was at the market gathering the week's vegetables and found myself considering the extravagance of a bunch of tulips. Spending the afternoon drawing their image proved to be not only justification of the purchase but the hopeful gift of the eventuality of Spring's arrival. Thus, this print reminds me of late winter grayness and the annual assurance that Spring does, indeed, eventually arrive.

Tulip Trio

Tulip Trio

When winter sets in, the fresh flowers offered at a variety of markets prove to be completely irresistible as a way to lift one’s spirits. That was the case with these tulips, which then became the subject of a drawing and successive print.

Two Boscs and a d'Anjou

Two Boscs and a d'Anjou

This pear trio puts me in mind of a group of frumpy middle-aged people. They wear a few battle scars and their figures have slipped a bit, but they've still got more than a few interesting thoughts and ideas to share with the world.

Victorian Summer

Victorian Summer

The screen door, the cool darkness behind it, and the geranium in the crock somehow epitomize summer. It’s not hard to find this scene. It was in my childhood; it’s right down the road now. For many of us, the summers of youth lay behind a screen door like this one.

Vita's Watering Cans

Vita's Watering Cans

On a visit to the gardens at Sissinghurst I came upon these watering cans situated by a wall hosting a leafy curtain. They were clearly long-used and posed in a way that made the composition of this drawing appear before my eyes. Now they are a visual reminder that allows me to return at will to that setting and day.
