Prints

These prints are created using zinc plates on which the images are developed using a variety of drawing and soft ground processes. They are then printed in limited editions. In some instances the skies have been tinted by rolling a tone onto an inked, wiped plate. In other cases, color is added by hand after the prints have dried.

Prints are matted in cream, acid-free mats.

Framed prints are matted and framed in silver chrome frames with plexiglas.

Prints can be purchased without mats or frames – prices on request.

Patriarch

Patriarch

Pines brought me to Maine. When I first visited the state, the smell of the air was notably different, thanks to the pines, and I didn't want to leave that scent. The visual smorgasbord pines offer means that I am never  at a loss for subject matter. Our monumental white pines are fatherly standouts, though, and inspire admiration. This one sits on a shore line, representing the species in fine form. I like to think it's a showier brother to the crew that towers over the woodland behind my home, sheltering in calm weather while always reminding me, in storms, of the primacy of nature's ultimate control of the world. I once saw a cabin named "one Maine pine" that had been made entirely from one tree. This specimen could probably become a similar project.

Phoebe’s Nest

Phoebe’s Nest

A couple of phoebes have built these wondrous moss nests several years in a row in a spot off my back porch. Though I have removed more than one nest and saved it for a drawing model, the ones I gather are always replaced with new models. This is one I saved and drew, with a little artistic license where the coloration of the eggs is concerned.

Primrose

Primrose

The primrose is another favorite harbinger of Spring. I spent a number of early Springs with students in England and these were among the first bloomers. They are often among the first in my garden in Maine as well. Drawing this print was a study in detail and I had great fun developing the texture on the leaves.

Prize Hollyhocks

Prize Hollyhocks

Despite the challenges they afford with respect to garden scourges like scale and Japanese beetles, hollyhocks are one of our garden staples.  Here, along with nascent lilies, they rise elegantly against the siding to provide a visual treat that varies from year to year, depending upon who managed to weather the winter.  This crop was particularly good and made for an image I couldn’t resist.

Quartet

Quartet

Pears always seem amusingly anthropomorphic to me, and when it is winter and “still-life” season, it is easy to find myself drawn to them in the market. This group of golden boscs and red d’anjous looks a bit like two middle aged couples, perhaps hanging out on a park bench or ready to watch a show. Whatever they’re doing, I like their poses and the fact that they make me smile.

Ready to Launch

I’m not really sure when this crew finally left the nest, but the day I took this photo they were all sitting there watching me as though they were waiting for permission to try to leave the nest. I was particularly amused by their crew cuts and the goggly eyes. One day they were there for this portrait and the next they had disappeared, leaving their happy home behind.

Rock Garden

Rock Garden

This was the first print I did when I moved to the Mills. At the base of this large rock face in “center city” is a well-tended bed of impatiens which I found most impressive. Equally impressive were the volunteer bits of vegetation overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds by thriving in tiny cracks of the rock.

Sand Castles

Sand Castles

Over the years I’ve visited beaches in many locations, and inevitably they have had sand dunes like these that provide aisles beyond which surprises appear when one makes one’s way to the shore. The “castles” in this print are the kind of weathered beach homes that one often discovers in such places.

Smelts

Smelts

Smelts provide the excuse for the construction of numerous ice fishing shacks that appear on frozen Maine waters each winter. The catch, sold in the local independent grocery stores, provides cheap fare - or cheap models, whatever your bent.

Snow Fairies

Snow Fairies

One day, on the way to the dump, I passed the home of a lady who has a number of grandchildren who live next door.  The yard featured these elegantly attired snow folks, complete with gossamer wings made of some sort of sheer material.  I particularly liked the touch of the matching flower brooch and chapeau décor on the lady.

Snow Mama

Snow Mama

One of my neighbors’ children produced this snow lady with her fancy twig hairdo and leafy necklace. I added the apron to her portrait. She looks to me as though she could be one of the lunch ladies at my elementary school cafeteria, ready to serve up a plate of ham and string beans.

Spring Dance

Spring Dance

An apple orchard in early Spring drew my attention first because of the luminous, pinkish color of the branches as they began their annual budding exercise. The more I looked at them, though, the more they became dancing figures, figures I thought were celebrating the coming of Spring. It was this dance I sought to capture in this print.

St. Remy Sun

St. Remy Sun

St. Remy was the home of the asylum where Vincent Van Gogh spent time trying to soothe his troubled mind. It is a truly peaceful place. It is also a village where I purchased some sunflowers which then were the subject of a number of drawings. This print is one of those drawings, done in front of the door into our kitchen when I was on a visit one summer to a nearby Provence village named Lioux.

Ste. Adresse – Oxford MD

Ste. Adresse – Oxford MD

This was inspired by Monet paintings of seaside terraces at Le Havre and Ste. Adresse. Looking out the attic window of my house in Oxford, one saw the fenced yards of the homes and their coveted views of the river. In this scene they are not inhabited, but come weekend evenings, those back yard terraces were high value real estate.

Tanglewood Evening

Tanglewood Evening

Anyone who has ever taken a picnic supper to Tanglewood can relate to this scene. It was great fun to sit and sketch this scene, including folks both settling in and already set up for the evening’s feasting and music beneath those wonderfully protective trees.

The Alcove

The Alcove

An extremely deep wall in an old half-timbered building I encountered in a village in southern France had this niche that had been tasked with providing a perch for a potted plant. I liked the scene, the colors, and the composition as well as the thought of a wall so thick you could perch a big plant pot in it and still have lots of depth to spare. So - this image found its way onto paper.

The Cellar Door

The Cellar Door

One of my neighbors’ houses has this wonderfully character-laden door into the cellar. When the tree in front of it matures, the door will definitely be out of commission.

The Cellar Window

The Cellar Window

The garden in front of this cellar window provides a succession of colorful images throughout the growing season. The hollyhocks always seem to provide my favorite set of coloring against what I find to be an appealing architectural backdrop.

The Conversation

The Conversation

Two blue porch rockers sat under a tree in our garden for several years.  They were a great place for visits and conversations.  One day I decided to do a drawing of their section of the garden.  When I got finished, it looked like the rockers themselves were having a conversation, so this print became an homage to the rockers, their conversation, and the conversations they’d hosted over the years.

The Elephant Tree

The Elephant Tree

This wonderful aging maple looms outside my kitchen window. When my mother moved in with me she named it “the elephant tree” because of its odd limb structure. It has been cabled to help it live longer, and it provides abundant shade to the front yard. I can only hope it outlives me, because I cannot imagine life without it.
