Prints

These prints are created using zinc plates on which the images are developed using a variety of drawing and soft ground processes. They are then printed in limited editions. In some instances the skies have been tinted by rolling a tone onto an inked, wiped plate. In other cases, color is added by hand after the prints have dried.

Prints are matted in cream, acid-free mats.

Framed prints are matted and framed in silver chrome frames with plexiglas.

Prints can be purchased without mats or frames – prices on request.

Looking for Spring

Looking for Spring

These geraniums were nearly discarded after being carried through a number of years. We decided to offer them one last chance, though, and brought them in at the frost. Amazingly, they rose to the challenge and by February were gazing hopefully out at the snow, keeping a bead on the distant bay and clearly scouting for the advent of Spring.

Lunchtime - Swan’s Island

Lunchtime - Swan’s Island

This print began on a camping trip with a group of students. We’d taken the boat from Bass Harbor to Swan’s Island as an exploratory venture. The still-life of our packs on the rocks where we stopped for lunch provided the image. This picture now reminds me of that lunch and the way we basked in the early May sunshine. The kids sunned themselves on the rocks like a crew of seals. They found this “educational experience” far preferable to classroom lectures.

Lupine Land

Lupine Land

Looking for strong, spiky blue in the garden, my mother and I tried delphiniums a number of times over the years, always without success. Lupines, with a little bit of coaching, though, can readily fill that bill. There is, in fact, nothing quite so breathtaking as seeing a field full of wild lupines - a sea of blue that declares "it is June in Maine and summer is on the rise."  It's a scene that never ceases to excite me and bring a smile to my soul.

Maine Isles

Maine Isles

The tiny islands off the coast are an endless source of fascination to me. I look out across the horizon and try to imagine what it would be like to live on an island, in solitude, with one’s life dictated by the elements.

Maine July

Maine July

There is nothing quite so appealing as the ubiquitous orange day lilies that grow wild everywhere you look in Maine in July. They definitely deserved a formal portrait.

  • Size: 6”h x 8”w image size
  • Unframed & Matted: $125.00
  • Framed: $160.00
March Greening

March Greening

As vineyards start to sprout while winter fades and fields take on varying shades of green thanks to sprouting crops, there is a real visual excitement to the scene and a sense of hope for the upcoming season. It’s an image that deserves recording for posterity and to evoke the unmistakable joy the coming of Spring provides each year.

  • Unframed & Matted: $80.00
  • Framed: $110.00
March Madness

March Madness

This image is based somewhat on reality, though it is, as the title denotes, born of the “madness” that March engenders in Maine.  It is a dreamy anticipation of a scene to come in the summer when the daylilies fill the landscape, nicely contrasted against birch whiteness, and the sea invites voyages on sunny days.

Maypole Dance

Maypole Dance

At the base of this hill, among the trees one can find a tiny maypole and dancers. The land is just beginning to come alive for the next season’s growth. There has been some plowing done, growth has appeared in the foreground, and the trees have their leaves. It is a perfect time to celebrate.

Meal Call

Meal Call

Watching the evolution of this nest of hatching birds is an adventure indeed. Fortunately, I was able one year to log progress via a number of photos. The open mouths hoping for sustenance were a stage I managed to catch one day. Presumably some food came at some point, but I did not see it arrive.

Mill Pond Rock

Mill Pond Rock

Anyone who has spent time in the Mills knows this rock. I find
it both impressive and beautiful, not to mention deserving of a
place in my memory as a consequence of the production of this
print.

Monhegan Dreaming

Monhegan Dreaming

All prints in this edition have been sold

The adirondack chairs at the Trailing Yew provide a perfect perch from which to think and dream. Listening to the foghorn at night, gazing at the sea by day, being a vacationer on Monhegan transports you into a dream-like existence, one which I can readily bring to mind by looking at this picture.

  • Size: 8”h x 6”w image size
  • Unframed & Matted: $125.00
  • Framed: $160.00
Monhegan Dreaming II

Monhegan Dreaming II

There is something surreal for me about this scene. I wanted to try another version of the imagery from Monhegan Dreaming. The change in size on the adirondack chairs and the trees gave the whole scene a very different scale. The sky suddenly became monumental in scope. This print is much more of a departure, a dream, of Monhegan than the first version.

  • Unframed & Matted: $125.00

Nancy’s Garden

Nancy’s Garden

This scene was drawn in a neighbor’s garden. Her name, too, is Nancy. The insertion of a bee skep I had made and the hollyhocks from my own garden into the scene began to make it my garden as well.

  • Size: 8”h x 10”w image size
  • Unframed & Matted: $150.00
Naomi's Door

Naomi's Door

Naomi lived down the road from me for a number of years, and I always liked this door on the end of her house. She has now moved from the home and the door is a different color, though equally as appealing. I expect a new door print will evolve in due course.

  • Unframed & Matted: $40.00

New England Meadow

New England Meadow

The rocks, the hills, the cows; the quintessential New England meadow. I drove past this particular one over and over again until I finally took the time one day to preserve it for posterity.

  • Size: 6”h x 8”w image size
  • Unframed & Matted: $125.00
  • Framed: $160.00
New England Winter

New England Winter

This is not a specific place. It is many places, gathered in my mind and combined into the quintessential New England landscape in winter. Most anyone who knows this section of the country can find a place in the memory bank that looks like this.

  • Size: 12”h x 15”w image size
  • Unframed & Matted: $170.00
New Year’s Luck

New Year’s Luck

I read somewhere that paper whites bring luck in the new year. Whether or not this is true, they certainly bring a smile to an often challenging season. Planted just after Christmas, they can make mid-January another gift as one follows the daily progress of those bulbs sitting on the window sill.  The fragrance when they finally open is an added reward.

  • Size: 4"h x 3"w image size
  • Unframed & Matted: $70.00
  • Framed: $95.00
Onions

Onions

At times I like to do colored pencil drawings of vegetables. This print is an etched version of one of those still-lifes.

  • Size: 2.75”h x 3”w image size
  • Unframed & Matted: $40.00
  • Framed: $60.00
Oriental Lady

Oriental Lady

My garden is replete with lilies that fill the air with a sweet scent on August evenings.  Uncharacteristically, I planted them at strategic locations so one walks from one fragrant spot to another on my garden pathways.  This one usually grows to be about five feet tall, an impressive effort indeed.  I like to think of her as having a special mystique, as she is certainly worthy of a place in any White Flower Farm catalog. Her kind has also been in art throughout history. So, it seemed a portrait was in order, hence the “Lady”.

Park Bench Evening

Park Bench Evening

Oxford, Maryland has a large, shady park in the center of town. On a hot evening there is no place quite so welcoming as a bench in the park where you can watch the boats on the river and cool off in the shade of the trees as the breeze from the water helps your cares float away.
