Prints

These prints are created using zinc plates on which the images are developed using a variety of drawing and soft ground processes. They are then printed in limited editions. In some instances the skies have been tinted by rolling a tone onto an inked, wiped plate. In other cases, color is added by hand after the prints have dried.

Prints are matted in cream, acid-free mats.

Framed prints are matted and framed in silver chrome frames with plexiglas.

Prints can be purchased without mats or frames – prices on request.

Berkshire Winter Series (5)

A Little Lake

A Little Lake

This landscape is a composite that grew directly out of my imagination and scenes I’ve witnessed at various times and places. It began with the lake and grew from there, an imagined wondrous valley in the throes of early spring green.  It would, I believe, be a grand place to visit and explore.

Acadia Days

Acadia Days

This print began on a trip to Acadia with a group of students. We were rock climbing, and I was at the base of the cliff supervising students’ take-off at the base of a rappel and tying on to a climb. There were quite a few hours of waiting time in this process since we had a group of eight inexperienced climbers. It was inevitable in that time that I saw a lot of the cliff, and decided to do this print.

Amish Winter

Amish Winter

This is Lancaster County, my home base, at its winter best. The haystacks are a good sign that this is likely an Amish farm. Therefore, the title more or less wrote itself.

April Bloodroot

April Bloodroot

Among the very first volunteers to break through in my spring garden are treasured bloodroot plants. I love the way these flowers look like miniature tulips, open fully in the sun, and fold or fan their leaves like peacocks. The fact that the Indians valued these plants for their ability to produce a red dye for baskets gives them an impressive pedigree as well.

August Bouquet

August Bouquet

By August, the garden has passed its peak and is winding down. The daylilies are gone, leaving only their foliage as a backdrop for the last hollyhocks and blue sage to combine and give me summer’s last bouquets.

Beaver Valley ‘78

Beaver Valley ‘78

This scene is from a Pennsylvania winter. The valley is near Williamsport. The rolling hills seem to go on endlessly, and it is clear from the evidence that shows on the land that this is farmland at rest beneath the snow.

Blackwater

Blackwater

On Maryland’s Eastern Shore lies the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. It is filled with marshes like the one depicted in this print, and in Fall it rings wildly with the cries of Canada geese as they gather for the great reunion that starts their winter in this location. Clearly the geese know a good thing when they see it.

Boot Hill, Danville

Boot Hill, Danville

This small family cemetery near Danville, Pennsylvania had an inviting starkness. Because the stones were all gathered beneath this one tree on a rise, it somehow suited my mental image of the classic “boot hill” of cowboy westerns, places I envision as lonely, isolated rises that can be seen for a good distance.

Brueghel ‘82

Brueghel ‘82

When I developed this print I was trying to focus on the shading of trees as a way to sculpt the landscape. The title was drawn from the fact that I inserted a number of tiny details in the scene. As with many Brueghel paintings, the longer you look, the more action you see. This picture holds a bicycle race, a plowing man, swimmers in a quarry, sunbathers on a beach, rowers in sculls, picnickers, and a kite flier, all nestled among the trees.

C's Bean Pole

C's Bean Pole

The beans climbing up this pole outside Christina Olson's kitchen made this an appealing composition. The Olson house is a mine of wondrous visual images, of which this was one of the first I drew. The coloring on the door is mine.

Casablancas on Parade

Casablancas on Parade

From the moment these bulbs first poke a tentative cone of a nose through the soil in early spring till the start of their bloom time in August, these white lilies garner all manner of attention. Sprouts are bathed with a mixture to repel lily beetles. Regular inspections and doses of deer spray are laced with words of encouragement, and in some instances stakes are installed to support wavering stems that get too tall.  By bloom time it feels as though a holiday is in the offing, and like marchers in a July 4th parade, each specimen stages a celebration, offering noble blooms that provide a drawing challenge and fragrance at dawn and dusk that makes my heart sing.

Coneflowers

Coneflowers

The pink coneflowers that grace my garden in August provide color on their own, but also appeal to the butterflies, which add other hues to the scene.

December Hyacinth

December Hyacinth

No hyacinth blooms in December, but fortunately one can find them at the market at times. This one came from Canada, and I was most grateful both for the visual treat it offered and the heavenly fragrance it provided to my living room for at least a week. I was particularly drawn to the greenish tone to its buds which, combined with the deep blue of the blossoms, offered a really wondrous color scheme.

Doreen's Breakfast Still Life

Doreen's Breakfast Still Life

A mutual friend of ours introduced me to Doreen by arranging to have me stay in the basement flat of her home in London. She told me she would leave breakfast materials out when she left for work the next day. I had no idea, though, that I would find this carefully arranged still life. Breakfast proved to be lengthy since I had to do the drawing before I disturbed anything. It took more than a few years, but I finally got it into print form as a reminder of that morning and in honor of what grew to be a friendship solidified by many subsequent visits.

Francescas Fields

Francescas Fields

When I first visited a friend in Francescas, a tiny village in the Gascogne region of southern France, it was March and the air was that brisk, invigorating gift featured in early Spring. We regularly walked the roads among newly-planted fields. In some cases rows were covered by hooped lengths of plastic, turned blue in hue by the sky’s reflection. When the wind caught these temporary greenhouses they rippled like waves, looking as though they were a giant Christo installation. I recorded the scene in my journal, and from that drawing this print was born.

Francescas Roofscape

Francescas Roofscape

The homes in this French village are built with shared walls, though there is much variation in heights and roof pitches. Varying ages of tiles and pitches mean that roofs end up with all manner of color variation depending upon where water stands or drains - or where mosses or lichens accumulate. Overlooking the rooftops from my friend Franny’s balcony provided this interesting variation on a landscape. The fact that the wisteria growing in the courtyard below me had begun to bloom was an added benefit, as the air was filled with the sweet aroma of the newly blossoming vine.

Getting Ripe

Getting Ripe

One particularly cool summer, the tomatoes seemed unable to get ripe on the vine, so they were ensconced on the window skill. With the backdrop of the back of the kitchen settee and a view through the vegetation, this scene seemed to need recording, along with the promise of ripe tomatoes.

Gossips

Gossips

My annual planting of sunflowers brought forth, one year, this little group. Sunflowers are great fun to draw, as I often find them taking on a sense of humanity - and personalities. In this case, when I was finished, there seemed to be a juicy conversation going on, with a pair of more silent listeners taking it all in.

Grace’s Garage

Grace’s Garage

Our neighbor, when we lived in Oxford, Maryland, was a gracious southern lady named Grace. Behind her house, at the end of her yard was a small garage that could never have housed a horse or car, but certainly had a great deal of classic architectural character. By its door stood a gathering of hollyhocks and larkspur. In concert with the pale blue paint on the garage, they made an irresistibly appealing annual bouquet I decided to record one summer.

Green Garden

Green Garden

The adirondack chairs in my yard are green. So, too, at various parts of the summer, is most of the garden. This print came from my enjoyment of those green periods, when the garden is varied by its shades and textures, a sight I find just as appealing as the periods of color.
