Prints

These prints are created using zinc plates on which the images are developed using a variety of drawing and soft ground processes. They are then printed in limited editions. In some instances the skies have been tinted by rolling a tone onto an inked, wiped plate. In other cases, color is added by hand after the prints have dried.

Prints are matted in cream, acid-free mats.

Framed prints are matted and framed in silver chrome frames with plexiglas.

Prints can be purchased without mats or frames – prices on request.

Brueghel ‘82

When I developed this print I was trying to focus on the shading of trees as a way to sculpt the landscape. The title was drawn from the fact that I inserted a number of tiny details in the scene. As with many Brueghel paintings, the longer you look, the more action you see. This picture holds a bicycle race, a plowing man, swimmers in a quarry, sunbathers on a beach, rowers in sculls, picnickers, and a kite flier, all nestled among the trees.

C's Bean Pole

The beans climbing up this pole outside Christina Olson's kitchen made this an appealing composition. The Olson house is a mine of wondrous visual images, of which this was one of the first I drew. The coloring on the door is mine.

Casablancas on Parade

From the moment these bulbs first poke a tentative cone of a nose through the soil in early spring till the start of their bloom time in August, these white lilies garner all manner of attention. Sprouts are bathed with a mixture to repel lily beetles. Regular inspections and doses of deer spray are laced with words of encouragement, and in some instances stakes are installed to support wavering stems that get too tall.  By bloom time it feels as though a holiday is in the offing, and like marchers in a July 4th parade, each specimen stages a celebration, offering noble blooms that provide a drawing challenge and fragrance at dawn and dusk that makes my heart sing.

Cloud Time

On a visit to the Deer Isle area one perfect Spring day this display of clouds over a spruce-topped isle afforded a perfect composition and color display for this print. Since I’ve seldom depicted clouds before, it also became a technical challenge that I’m happy I accepted.

Coneflowers

The pink coneflowers that grace my garden in August provide color on their own, but also appeal to the butterflies, which add other hues to the scene.

Dancing Boots

One rainy day I slopped out to the mailbox, and when I returned stepped out of my boots and propped my umbrella by the door.  Later, I noticed that the scene made an interesting still-life that had been constructed quite by accident. I am particularly drawn to the boots, whose position make them look as though they’re practicing a dance move.

December Hyacinth

No hyacinth blooms in December, but fortunately one can find them at the market at times. This one came from Canada, and I was most grateful both for the visual treat it offered and the heavenly fragrance it provided to my living room for at least a week. I was particularly drawn to the greenish tone to its buds which, combined with the deep blue of the blossoms, offered a really wondrous color scheme.

Deer Isle Inlet

Maine is filled with scenic inlets such as this one, so it is never difficult for me to find a vista to draw. I particularly like spots where the rocks are layered in shelves, like a disorderly stack of pancakes or a layer cake gone awry. Such scenes always lead me to muse over and marvel at the geologic upheavals that created these formations, an exercise that inevitably makes me shake my head in wonder.

Doreen's Breakfast Still Life

A mutual friend of ours introduced me to Doreen by arranging to have me stay in the basement flat of her home in London. She told me she would leave breakfast materials out when she left for work the next day. I had no idea, though, that I would find this carefully arranged still life. Breakfast proved to be lengthy since I had to do the drawing before I disturbed anything. It took more than a few years, but I finally got it into print form as a reminder of that morning and in honor of what grew to be a friendship solidified by many subsequent visits.

Eagle’s View

Traveling about Maine, it is not at all unusual these days to see an eagle coasting on the winds, peering down at the scene below. That bird can see a scene like this first hand with ease; for me it requires a couple hours of hiking to gain the right vantage. Whether achieved by wing or by foot, gazing down upon this landscape offers a feeling of optimism and hope that the crops in these verdant fields will succeed and the land will roll onward endlessly in this open state beyond the horizon.
