Prints

These prints are created using zinc plates on which the images are developed using a variety of drawing and soft ground processes. They are then printed in limited editions. In some instances the skies have been tinted by rolling a tone onto an inked, wiped plate. In other cases, color is added by hand after the prints have dried.

Prints are matted in cream, acid-free mats.

Framed prints are matted and framed in silver chrome frames with plexiglas.

Prints can be purchased without mats or frames – prices on request.

I’m not really sure when this crew finally left the nest, but the day I took this photo they were all sitting there watching me as though they were waiting for permission to try to leave the nest. I was particularly amused by their crew cuts and the goggly eyes. One day they were there for this portrait and the next they had disappeared, leaving their happy home behind.

Reverie

The original version of this image is a watercolor I did many years ago on my first visit to Monhegan, a watercolor that still hangs in my home. The island was a place I felt I had discovered the meditative effect of “water gazing”. There is nothing so calming or restorative as having a perch for thinking and dreaming that allows a view across water to islands on the horizon, and Maine offers those scenes in abundance. With this print I can share my well-loved scene with others and give them a visual perch for similar dreaming.

Rock Garden

This was the first print I did when I moved to the Mills. At the base of this large rock face in “center city” is a well-tended bed of impatiens which I found most impressive. Equally impressive were the volunteer bits of vegetation overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds by thriving in tiny cracks of the rock.

Sand Castles

Over the years I’ve visited beaches in many locations, and inevitably they have had sand dunes like these that provide aisles beyond which surprises appear when one makes one’s way to the shore. The “castles” in this print are the kind of weathered beach homes that one often discovers in such places.

September Contentment

One late September day I made my way down the Boothbay Peninsula to Cape Newagen. There was a warm sun and a cool breeze and, of course, the smell of salt in the air. This drawing emerged from that day, a close-up of one of our many tiny spruce-topped isles. It was a magical afternoon because I was quite alone, entertained only by the sounds of birds, the sight before me, and the feeling of autumn at its very best, letting me wallow in a perfect day ‘ere the full effects of impending winter crept upon us. The day and the completion of the drawing felt like a real celebration.

Smelts

Smelts provide the excuse for the construction of numerous ice fishing shacks that appear on frozen Maine waters each winter. The catch, sold in the local independent grocery stores, provides cheap fare - or cheap models, whatever your bent.

Snow Fairies

One day, on the way to the dump, I passed the home of a lady who has a number of grandchildren who live next door. The yard featured these elegantly attired snow folks, complete with gossamer wings made of some sort of sheer material. I particularly liked the touch of the matching flower brooch and chapeau décor on the lady.

Snow Mama

One of my neighbors’ children produced this snow lady with her fancy twig hairdo and leafy necklace. I added the apron to her portrait. She looks to me as though she could be one of the lunch ladies at my elementary school cafeteria, ready to serve up a plate of ham and string beans.

Snow Romeo

This fellow appeared outside a house up the road from me, clearly tasked with a particular mission. I liked his crewcut and the determined look on his face. One can only hope that his quest was successful.

Souvenir

On a visit to friends who live on Penobscot Bay, I was taken with this view, framed by a tree right outside the window. Since I had failed to take my sketchbook along, I crafted this picture from memory. As striking a view as it was by day, it was even more remarkable at night when the moon glow woke me with a breathtaking display of silver against a star-filled black sky and reflections on the water. As souvenirs are meant to help one recall pleasant memories, so this print is my souvenir of that remarkable night on the bay.
