Winston's Goldfish

At Winston Churchill's home, Chartwell, in Sussex, England, there is a pool filled with goldfish beside which sits a "thinking chair" that belonged to the great man. The idea of doing a print of his goldfish had appeal. I combined the fish with a pond inspired by one alongside a cottage where I was staying when I visited Chartwell, so these are Winston's fish in an amended setting.

Winter Birch

Few scenes are quite as arresting as a stand of white birch trees arrayed against a clear blue winter sky. White birches are one of nature’s true marvels; swift and delicate as growers, easily bowed by storms, not particularly valued for their wood, yet exalted and loved for their showy appearance. In my childhood Pennsylvania home we had a quintet of never-to be-burned birch logs my mother had had her New Hampshire-based brother import to adorn the living room fireplace. With similar attachment, the owners of a store where my prints found a berth named their emporium BIRCH. It seemed only fitting that this print should be made to honor their choice.

Winter Garden

The Olson house in Cushing, made famous by Andrew Wyeth's painting, has gray, weathered siding. One of the kitchen windows has a collection of geraniums in it, as was the case when Christina lived there. This print is my version of the window and is just the kind of garden any of us can have in the dead of winter.

Winter in Happy Valley

I drove past this scene outside Amherst Massachusetts every day for three years and finally decided to do a drawing. It was most appealing in winter when the dried leftovers from the harvest stood out starkly and the distant hills were shaded with areas of snow and trees. The stippling in the sky was an experiment which happily satisfied me when the print was completed.

Winter Studio

This interior was drawn from the view down the hallway to the doorway of my studio. I was intrigued by the visual layers in the scene. Beyond the open door is the stove that becomes the focus of activity for at least half of each year as it adds warmth and a center of conversation during the winter. And, beyond that, are the hemlocks that provide a backdrop outside the window throughout the year.

Winter Tree Farm

The sections of ordered planting on this vast tract of land became much more apparent after a heavy snowfall. The snow revealed the existence of considerably more young trees than I’d first seen when I passed by in the Fall. The clarity snow brings to the land is at times a bit like washing the windows for the first time in years. You see the world in a whole new light.

Winter Watchers

Each fall I pot up the geraniums that have been enjoying the outdoors all season, happy that they will offer me some indoor color and horticultural companionship. In a clear sign that they yearn for summer’s warming sunshine they get leggy and stretch toward any available light - and - in some version of revolt they tend not to bloom. In February or early March the most enthusiastic of the crop succumb to my cheerleading and push out a bloom, looking across the snow in hopes of seeing some glimmer of Spring. Here they are, waiting and watching.

Winterscape

There is a clear definition to the land which takes place after winter’s snow removes some of the visual distractions of vegetation. I never tire of looking at these scenes. Leafless trees show their varied skeletons against a high-contrast background; high points of land, partially bared by wind clearly define contours; and, changing daylight puts on an amazingly delicate shadow show.

Winterscape II

The rolling hills of central Pennsylvania provided the inspiration for this print. Like many of my winter scenes, it is an image born from my fascination with the way trees and the bits of foliage that remain on the landscape in winter are visually etched in the snow once the fields are enrobed.

Zinnias

In a summer when my zinnias were highly successful I had drawing material well into the autumn. The endless variety this species offers with respect both to color and size makes them an excellent drawing model. They also allow me to believe that summer has not quite completely passed.
